Aaron M. Socha, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor: Department of Chemistry
Queens University of Charlotte

sochaa@queens.edu

Aaron has taught chemistry at BCC since 2011, and directed the CSE from 2013-2016. His PhD work focused on drug discovery where he performed structure elucidation and synthesis of several classes of naturally occurring antibiotics under David Rowley at University of Rhode Island. The compounds were isolated from marine microbes, synthetically optimized and subsequently evaluated against clinical pathogens.  As an NSF postdoctoral fellow at Brown University with Jason Sello, and Sandia National Lab with Blake Simmons and Seema Singh, Aaron researched microbial lignin catabolism and lipid biosynthesis and developed a fascination with biodiesel fuel and green chemistry.   He now works on biofuel processes involving ionic liquids and catalysts derived from biomass waste streams. He continues to collaborate with BCC on grant funded projects including the NSF ATE (Chemical and BioEnergy Technology for Sustainability) and the CUNY 2020 (Sustainable Fuel and Product Development Lab).
