HISTORY: Established in 2003 at BCC, CSE is funded with a Congressional appropriation sponsored by Representative José Serrano, and is administered through the U.S. Department of Energy. Since its inception CSE has trained over 1,500 students in Sustainability.
MISSION: The mission of the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE), located at the City University of New York’s Bronx Community College (BCC), is to promote and implement the use of sustainable and efficient energy technologies in urban communities through education, training, workforce development, research and project facilitation. The Center for Sustainable Energy supports clean energy development and energy conservation as the means to protect the environment, enhance public health and position New York City to capture emerging economic development opportunities in the energy sector. CSE also plays a key role in helping the City University of New York fulfill its PlaNYC University Challenge to the City of New York to reduce its emissions by 30% by 2017.

AREAS OF FOCUS: CSE supports clean energy development and energy conservation as the means to protect the environment, enhance public health and position New York City to capture emerging economic development opportunities in the energy sector.

INNOVATION: In 2007, the Mayor’s Office named CSE as the action arm of the New York City Solar America City partnership with the Department of Energy. CSE also plays a key role in helping the City University of New York fulfill its PlaNYC University Challenge to the City of New York to reduce its emissions by 30% by 2017. CSE is an Accredited ISPQ Training Program by IREC (The Interstate Renewable Energy Council).

TRAINING PROGRAMS: CSE received Continuing Education Provider Accreditation for our Solar Thermal Design and Installation Class by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC). CSE has met all requirements for its’ Solar Thermal Design and Installation Class that designates it to be recognized by the Institute for Sustainable Power (ISPQ) Global Accreditation and Certification.

CUNY NETWORK: CSE’s CUNY Campus Partners include: BCC, Borough of Manhattan Community College, The City College of New York, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College, Medgar Evers College and New York City College of Technology.
